Serious Marilyn Monroe photo is one of George Zimbel’s most poignant works from the 1954 filming of The Seven Year Itch. On a New York City street at night, Marilyn Monroe stood above the subway grate in her famous white halter dress. Unlike the playful publicity shots, this photograph reveals a rare serious expression — a contemplative side of Marilyn that is seldom seen.

The backstory deepens its power. After Joe DiMaggio stormed off the set, George Zimbel—moved behind the police barricades—captured Monroe glowing in the spotlight, her white dress lifted by wind machines, surrounded by the silhouettes of onlookers. At that moment, Zimbel recorded not just the icon but the woman.

George later explained how he ended up behind the barrier:

“I bet you there were two or three hundred people there. They were behind the police lines and my idea was that I was using a Leica camera, it is very quiet, so even though they said no more shooting I took a few frames and the next thing I knew I was behind the police line. Fortunately, for me, that was a very good place to be so I just kept shooting where the barrier was and that was fine.”

This perspective — literally from behind the crowd — gave Zimbel the angle that makes Serious Marilyn Monroe photo so powerful.

Anne Tucker, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, highlighted the image’s deeper significance:

“George also photographed not just Marilyn the icon but Marilyn the person… There aren’t many pictures of her like that. This is consistent with his approach: find the humanity in his subject and then make it visible in such a way that the rest of us would connect with it.”

Zimbel’s vision has been recognized internationally. His work is in major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the IVAM – Institut Valencià d’Art Modern.
