A Book of Love and Legacy

Momento (Archive Enhanced Edition) is more than a photography book. Created by George S. Zimbel and his wife, Elaine Sernovitz Zimbel, it is a lasting record of their shared vision. Published in 2015, the book coincided with the release of Zimbelism, the award-winning documentary film on George’s life and work.

The Vision of George S. Zimbel

George S. Zimbel (1929–2023) was an American-born Canadian documentary photographer. He was part of the last generation of photographers faithful to the Photo League tradition. His images reveal empathy, humanity, and a deep connection to the people and places he photographed.

Educated at Columbia University, Zimbel developed his craft in New York City. He worked with Photo League members such as John Ebstel and Garry Winogrand and studied under Alexey Brodovitch. His career included assignments for Look, The New York Times, Redbook, Parents, and Architectural Forum. Alongside commercial work, he created an independent body of photography that includes Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch, and political figures like Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, and Truman.

A Commitment to Purity

Zimbel never manipulated his negatives or prints. He refused digital alteration, believing that truth in photography matters. This dedication shaped a body of work now held in major collections worldwide, including MoMA, the National Gallery of Canada, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the International Center of Photography, and the Musée National d’Histoire d’Art de Luxembourg.
