Test Fan
Marilyn Monroe Where Is Marilyn — subtitled Test Fan by George Zimbel — was made during a moment when the subway grate fans were being checked. Tom Ewell stands with his hands in his pockets, calm and observant, while Marilyn’s skirt flies completely over her head. The image playfully answers its own title: for a second, she seems to disappear into the swirl of fabric.
Behind the Barrier
This was one of the frames George captured after he was pushed behind the police line. You can see the silhouettes of onlookers in the foreground, their outlines cutting across the bottom of the picture. Far from spoiling the shot, these shadows give the photograph its edge: a sense of being part of the crowd, watching history happen from the margins.
Why Collect Black-and-White Photography?
Because it sharpens contrasts — light against dark, subject against shadow. In Where Is Marilyn, the stark black silhouettes heighten the brightness of Marilyn’s dress and the sudden comic drama of the moment.
