Marilyn Monroe Looking Left, Hands at the Front is one of George Zimbel’s striking photographs from the 1954 filming of The Seven Year Itch. On a late-night New York street, Monroe stands above the Lexington Avenue subway grate in her now-legendary white halter dress. In this frame, she turns gracefully to her left, her hands pressed at the front of the dress as it flares with the rush of air.

The backstory adds to its significance. Surrounded by fellow photographers, police, and a crowd of onlookers estimated in the hundreds, Zimbel worked quietly with his Leica, capturing moments that went beyond Hollywood’s publicity machine. His approach, candid and humanist, preserved the interplay between Monroe’s iconic pose and the energy of the scene around her — the lights, the anticipation, and the controlled chaos of a movie set staged on a city corner.

Zimbel later reflected on how he was moved behind the police lines, giving him an unexpected angle on the night.
