Through the Crowd
Marilyn Monroe Arrives is George Zimbel’s record of the anticipation surrounding the 1954 filming of The Seven Year Itch. Instead of focusing on the staged scene, Zimbel turned his lens toward Marilyn’s entrance. Seen through a tangle of police officers, hats, and curious onlookers, Monroe’s face emerges — luminous, framed by shadow.
George’s Approach
This image shows why George called himself a humanist photographer. He wasn’t chasing glamour alone. By placing Marilyn among the people, he documented the balance between star and crowd, public and private. She is both central and obscured — an icon stepping into a real New York night, met by the chaos of cameras, fans, and police.
